Common Causes of Muscle and Joint Pain
Muscle and joint pain can arise from various factors, including:
- Injuries: Sports injuries, accidents, or falls can lead to muscle strain or joint sprains, resulting in pain and reduced mobility.
- Overuse: Repetitive motions or overuse of muscles and joints can cause inflammation and discomfort.
- Postural Issues: Poor posture can place undue stress on muscles and joints, leading to chronic pain.
- Arthritis: Degenerative conditions like osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis often cause joint pain and stiffness.
- Sedentary Lifestyle: Lack of physical activity can weaken muscles, making them more prone to pain and injury.

Scoliosis is a spinal condition characterized by an abnormal rotation at spine, often forming an "S" or "C" shape. The severity of scoliosis is measured using the Cobb angle, which indicates the degree of curvature. A Cobb angle greater than 10 degrees is typically considered scoliosis. This condition most commonly develops during adolescence, but it can occur at any age, leading to uneven level of shoulder and hip, pain, and for some severe scoliosis might need to wear brace or even do spinal fusion surgery.
At Normed Physical Therapy, we specialize in treating scoliosis using the Schroth Method (Germany)—a non-surgical, evidence-based physiotherapy approach that focuses on customized exercises that help realign the spine, improve posture, and strengthen the muscles that support the spine.
Ergonomic posture and cervical spine flexibility issues are key factors in preventing neck problems, yet many people overlook them. Neglecting these aspects can lead to severe migraines, hand weakness, pain, and numbness, often resulting from nerve compression or muscle strain in the neck. If left untreated, these conditions can worsen, leading to chronic pain, reduced neck mobility, and decreased daily productivity.
At Normed Physical Therapy, our expert physiotherapy treatments focus on addressing the root causes of neck issues. We improve ergonomic posture, enhance muscle flexibility and strength, and align the spine to relieve neck pain and restore function.
Poor ergonomic posture, lack of core strength, sit or stand for long hours, heavy lifting, and a sedentary lifestyle can lead to severe back pain, leg weakness and numbness. These symptoms often result from a herniated disc pressing on nearby nerves. If left untreated, these conditions can worsen, leading to chronic pain, reduced mobility, and decreased daily productivity.
At Normed Physical Therapy, our expert physiotherapy treatments focus on addressing the root causes of slipped disc issues. We improve ergonomic posture, enhance muscle flexibility and strength, and align the spine to relieve pain and restore function.
Frozen shoulder, also known as adhesive capsulitis, is a condition characterized by stiffness, pain, and limited range of motion in the shoulder joint. This condition typically develops gradually and can significantly impact daily activities, making it difficult to perform even simple tasks like reaching overhead or behind your back.
The exact cause of frozen shoulder isn't always clear, but it often occurs after an injury, surgery, or prolonged immobilization of the shoulder. If left untreated, frozen shoulder can lead to chronic pain, severe stiffness, and a prolonged recovery period.
At Normed Physical Therapy, our expert physiotherapy treatments are designed to relieve pain, restore mobility, and improve shoulder function. We use targeted exercises, manual therapy, and other modalities to gradually reduce stiffness and restore full range of motion. Early intervention is key to preventing long-term complications and ensuring a quicker recovery.
Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) and golfer's elbow (medial epicondylitis) are common conditions that cause pain and inflammation in the elbow due to overuse of the forearm muscles. Despite their names, these conditions aren't limited to athletes; they can affect anyone who performs repetitive motions, such as gripping, lifting, or twisting.
Tennis elbow occurs on the outer part of the elbow and is often triggered by repetitive wrist and arm motions.
Golfer's elbow, on the other hand, affects the inner part of the elbow and is associated with repetitive gripping or wrist flexion. Both conditions can cause pain, weakness, and reduced grip strength, making it difficult to perform daily tasks.
At Normed Physical Therapy, our expert physiotherapy treatments focus on relieving pain, reducing inflammation, and restoring strength to the affected muscles. Through targeted exercises, manual therapy, dry needling and ergonomic adjustments, we help patients recover from tennis elbow and golfer's elbow, preventing further injury and promoting long-term elbow health.
De Quervain Tenosynovitis, commonly known as "Mommy's Hand," is a painful condition affecting the tendons on the thumb side of the wrist. It often develops due to repetitive hand and wrist motions, such as lifting a baby, typing, or gripping objects, making it particularly common among new mothers and those with jobs involving repetitive hand movements.
This condition causes pain and swelling near the base of the thumb, making it difficult to grasp or pinch objects. If left untreated, De Quervain Tenosynovitis can lead to chronic pain, reduced hand function, and difficulty performing daily tasks.
At Normed Physical Therapy, our expert physiotherapy treatments focus on reducing pain and inflammation, restoring mobility, and strengthening the affected tendons. Through targeted exercises, manual therapy, and ergonomic guidance, we help patients recover from De Quervain Tenosynovitis and regain full use of their hands.
Sciatica is a condition characterized by pain that radiates along the sciatic nerve, which runs from the hips and down each leg. This pain is often caused by a poor posture, tightness of piriformis muscle, or other issues that compress the nerve, leading to sharp, shooting pain, tingling, or numbness in the hip, buttocks, and leg.
Sciatica can significantly affect mobility and daily activities, making it difficult to walk, sit, or stand for extended periods. If left untreated, sciatica can lead to chronic pain, muscle weakness, and reduced quality of life.
At Normed Physical Therapy, our expert physiotherapy treatments focus on relieving sciatic nerve compression, reducing pain, and improving hip and spine alignment. Through targeted exercises, manual therapy, and posture correction, we help patients alleviate sciatica symptoms and prevent future flare-ups, enabling them to return to their normal activities with improved comfort and function.
Plantar fasciitis is an inflammation of the thick band of tissue (plantar fascia) that runs along the bottom of the foot, causing sharp heel pain, especially in the morning or after prolonged periods of sit or stand. It often results from overuse, improper footwear, or excessive strain on the foot.
Ankle sprains occur when the ligaments supporting the ankle are overstretched or torn, usually due to a sudden twist, fall, or misstep. This injury leads to pain, swelling, and instability in the ankle, making it difficult to walk or bear weight on the affected foot.
At Normed Physical Therapy, our expert physiotherapy treatments focus on reducing pain, promoting healing, and restoring function for both plantar fasciitis and ankle sprains. We utilize targeted exercises, manual therapy, dry needling and personalized rehabilitation plans to strengthen the foot and ankle, improve flexibility, and prevent future injuries.
